Ride-on golf trolleys: where are they allowed?

A golf trolley you stand or sit on saves energy and time. But one question comes up before almost every purchase: am I actually allowed to use it on the course? There is no blanket answer. This guide explains what it depends on, which models count as push trolleys and which as ride-on units, and how to settle the question with your club.

The course rules decide

Whether a ride-on unit is permitted on a golf course is set by the individual club in its course rules. The E-CadPro manual says the same: use on all golf courses is not guaranteed, and the course rules are always what counts. We therefore do not give you a blanket assurance, but show you how to get clarity quickly.

It is worth knowing that, according to the E-CadPro manual, the unit is designed for golf courses and private land and is not a road vehicle. Use on public roads may be unlawful.

Push trolley or ride-on unit: the difference

When asking about permission, the design of the unit matters. Some clubs distinguish in their rules between a trolley that you walk alongside and a unit that you ride. Whether and how your club does so is stated in its course rules.

The E-CadPro as a fallback

The E-CadPro has two operating modes: in stand-up ride mode you ride it, and in e-trolley mode you push it like a classic trolley. According to the manual, it is accepted on many courses in e-trolley mode, but the course rules remain binding. That gives you an option if your club does not allow riding: you can then walk alongside the unit. For stand-up ride mode, check the course rules beforehand.

Checklist: what to ask your club

The quickest way to settle the question is a short enquiry to the club office or the head greenkeeper. These points will help:

  • Are electric golf trolleys allowed on the course?
  • Is there a separate rule for units that you stand or sit on?
  • Is a permit, a medical certificate or a registration required?
  • Are there restrictions for certain areas such as greens, approaches or tees?
  • Does the rule apply equally to members and guests?
  • Are there set paths you should use?

Ask for the answer in writing, ideally by email. That way you have it if someone refers to the rule later.

Riding safely on the course

Whatever the permission, a few rules from the E-CadPro manual apply: only one person may stand on the platform, sturdy shoes are mandatory, and on wet ground or slopes you ride more slowly because braking distances get longer. It is best to start your first round in push mode to get a feel for the steering and brake.

It is also worth asking as a guest: if you play on another course, the rule there may differ from the one at your home course.

Frequently asked questions

Can I ride my GOOTER on any golf course?

No, that cannot be said in general. Permission depends on the course rules of the individual club. Clarify it with your club beforehand.

May I use it on public roads?

That is not intended. According to the E-CadPro manual, the unit is designed for golf courses and private land, it is not a road vehicle, and use on public roads may be unlawful.

What can I do if my club does not allow riding?

Models where you walk alongside are an option, as is the E-CadPro in e-trolley mode. Here too, ask your club beforehand whether it permits electric trolleys.

Conclusion and recommendation

Get your club's answer before you decide on a ride-on unit. If you want to be on the safe side, choose a model you can also push if necessary. You will find more on the stand-up model on the page Electric golf trolley for riding, and information for clubs and courses on the page For golf clubs. The model comparison shows you which model suits you.
